Much
of the imagery in my fiber work has been inspired by the history
of Wisconsin’s north woods and my studio surroundings
there, as well as by avian research. Currently, a theme echoing
throughout my beaded textile work is the striking beauty of
birds from around the world that have been threatened by habitat
loss,
over-harvesting and retail consumption.
Present work is based on my photography of pelts and feathers
along with personal observation of bird specimens. This hands-on
knowledge from researching and collecting specimens plays
a key role in my design. Therefore, choice, not chance determines
the outcome of my work, along with a deep sense of respect
for the materials I use.
On fabric, I abstract my photographic images by the application
of beads, colored pencil, acrylic paint and hand-embroidered
thread. The resulting composition is a melding of hand skills,
a trained eye and familiar materials expressing my interest
and concerns for our avian resources. By viewing my textiles,
I hope to invoke a positive response to conservation of fauna
and the sensual pleasure of exquisite colors, textures and
patterns found on the bird plumage.
